National Croissant Day

Happy National Croissant Day, everyone!!! These fun, random food holidays are definitely some of my favorite. They provide the perfect excuse to indulge.
Warm croissants are by far my favorite.
Today's breakfast of champs? Move over, Wheaties, it's all about perfectly layered fluffy, rich pastry. Top it with butter or preserves, stuff it with chocolate or ham ad cheese, whatever your favorite, today is the day to eat up.

The story behind these deliciously buttery pastry starts in Austria during the siege of the Turkish Empire. Supposedly the wonderful Viennese bakers (whose workshops were often found in basements) could hear the Turkish intruders digging tunnels beneath the city. By alerting their army they saved their city. In celebration they created a lovely little pastry in the shape of a crescent moon to mirror the symbol of the Ottoman Empire.

Over a hundred years later, enter Marie Antoinette. She was a lovely young Austrian princess who wed into French royalty. She brought along her crescent shaped dough, and it was in France that the term croissant was coined.

Whether this lovely legend is true or not, the story still makes my stomach rumble. Time to head on down to the local coffee shop and celebrate this holiday properly.
